The economies of China and Switzerland are highly complementary. Although under the double impact of the international financial crisis and the European debt crisis, in recent years, bilateral trade between the two countries maintained a rapid growth. In 2011, the Sino-Swiss bilateral trade totaled $ 30.9 billion, a year - on - year growth of 54%, among which China's imports from Switzerland amounts to $ 27.2 billion, a year - on - year growth of 60%. The main bulk of imported goods are high-tech products, metal processing machine tools, pharmaceuticals, and wrist watches. In January 2011, when Chen Deming, Minister of Commerce, was attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, he and Schneider-Oman, Swiss Economy Minister, jointly announced the launch of bilateral FTA negotiations, since then three rounds of negotiations have been held by the two parties.
